Basin Wastes
Often overlooked, but never unimportant — a basin waste is one of those small details that makes a significant difference to how your finished bathroom looks and functions. Whether you're fitting a brand new basin, upgrading an existing cloakroom sink, or simply replacing a tired plug, choosing the right basin waste ensures efficient drainage, a clean aesthetic finish, and a seamless match with your taps and fixtures.
What Is a Basin Waste — and Which Type Do You Need?
A basin waste connects your basin to its drain pipe and controls how water flows in and out of the sink. All standard UK basin wastes are 1¼ inch (32mm) — the key decision is choosing the right style and whether you need a slotted or unslotted waste:
- Slotted basin waste — required when your basin has an overflow hole. The slot allows excess water from the overflow to drain safely, preventing flooding.
- Unslotted basin waste — used when your basin has no overflow. Never fit an unslotted waste to a basin with an overflow, as it will block the drainage path.
The Four Main Basin Waste Types
- Click-clack (push-open) waste — the most popular modern choice. Push the stopper down to close, push again to open. Simple, clean, and no lever mechanism required.
- Pop-up waste — operated by a lever typically positioned behind the tap. Smooth and sleek, ideal for coordinated tap and waste sets.
- Flip-top waste — a minimalist disc-style stopper that rotates to open and close. Perfect for contemporary, clutter-free basins.
- Plug and chain waste — the traditional choice. Timeless in classic and heritage-style bathrooms, with the plug's chain attached to the overflow for easy use.
