What do I need under the sink for a boiling water tap?

Room for the tank — typically a standard base cupboard — a fused switched socket that is not shared with a waste disposal, and a mains cold water feed you can tee into for the filter. A 4-in-1 needs space for a second chiller tank too.

Is the water actually boiling?

It comes out at close to boiling, hot enough to make tea and blanch vegetables. Tanks are usually set around 98°C to stop the water flashing to steam in the pipework.

Are boiling water taps safe with children in the house?

They are designed with a deliberately awkward two-stage handle action so they cannot be knocked on, and the spout is insulated. They still deliver near-boiling water, so the same care applies as with a kettle.

What happens when the filter runs out?

Flow drops off and scale starts reaching the tank, which shortens its life. Filters are replaceable and sold separately — how long one lasts depends on how hard your water is and how much you use.
