The single thing to get right is slotted versus unslotted. If your basin has an overflow hole near the rim, you need a slotted waste so the overflow can drain through it. If it has no overflow — which is common on countertop basins — you need an unslotted one, or water will seep out of the slot.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a slotted and unslotted waste?
A slotted waste has an opening in the side of the body so water from the basin overflow can pass through and drain away. An unslotted waste is sealed, and is used on basins that have no overflow hole. Fitting the wrong one either blocks the overflow or lets water escape.
Do I need a bottle trap as well as a waste?
Yes, unless you already have a trap in place. The waste is the part you see in the basin; the trap is the U-bend or bottle below it that holds a water seal and stops drain smells coming back into the room. On an exposed pedestal or countertop basin the trap is visible, so finish matters.
What size are basin and bath wastes?
Basin wastes are almost always 1.25 inch (32mm) and bath wastes 1.5 inch (40mm) in the UK. Shower tray wastes here are 90mm to suit the standard tray aperture. Check the individual product page for the exact figures.
