Chrome Radiator Valves

Chrome is the default because it matches almost every radiator and every other chrome fitting in the house, and because it is the finish you can always find a replacement for. If your radiator is white, anthracite or black, consider whether a matching valve would look tidier than chrome at floor level.

Which chrome valve do I need?

• Check the pipe direction first — that decides angled, straight or corner.
• Fit a TRV on every radiator except the room holding your main thermostat.
• A lockshield with a drain-off saves lifting floorboards next time the system needs emptying.
• Valves come in pairs; you need one pair per radiator.

What is a lockshield valve for?

It is the valve on the return side, used to balance the system so each radiator gets its fair share of flow. It is set once during commissioning and then left alone, usually under a cap.

Should every radiator have a thermostatic valve?

Nearly — but the room with your main wall thermostat should keep manual valves. If a TRV in that room closes down, the boiler keeps firing because the wall thermostat never sees the target temperature.
