Hekla Slate Dark Grey Slate Effect Matt Porcelain 60x120cm Wall & Floor Tile

Hekla is named after the Icelandic volcano and looks the part — a weathered, cleft-face slate reproduced in matt porcelain with real surface texture you can feel under your hand. Slate is the darker of the two colours: a deep blue-grey ground mottled with brown, rust and ochre where the iron has bled through the stone, with paler silver-grey patches breaking the surface. It reads as a dark grey slate floor from across the room and as a rich, multi-tonal stone up close. At 60x120cm with rectified edges it lays up with tight joints, so you get the look of a slate flag floor without the sealing, the unevenness or the cold.

Where it works

Kitchen and utility floors, hallways, boot rooms, open-plan living floors, bathroom floors and shower walls, fireplace hearths and surrounds. Dark mottled slate is the most practical floor colour there is — it hides mud, crumbs and pet hair — and the matt texture gives real grip underfoot compared with a polished tile. Pairs with white walls and black or brass fittings for a modern look, or with timber and brick for a farmhouse kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it slippery?
No. Hekla has a pendulum test value of 36+, which the HSE classifies as low slip potential — the category recommended for bathroom, kitchen and hallway floors. The riven matt surface is what delivers that grip.

How do I clean a textured tile?
A flat microfibre mop and a pH-neutral porcelain cleaner. Avoid soap-based products, which leave a film in the texture. Unlike real slate, it never needs sealing.

What preparation does a 60x120cm tile need?
A flat, stable substrate, a large-format flexible adhesive, full back-buttering and a levelling clip system. On a textured floor tile a dark grey or charcoal grout hides joint lines and keeps the slate-floor look. Dry-lay from several boxes first to spread the shade variation evenly.

Can I use it outside?
Porcelain is frost-proof, but this is the interior-grade natural finish. For patios and exterior steps use a dedicated 20mm exterior tile.

How do I measure my room for tiles?
Measure the length and width of the room and multiply them together to get the square meterage. We recommend adding 10% for cuts and wastage.
Are these tiles suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes, most of our porcelain and ceramic tiles are suitable for underfloor heating. Please check the 'Product Details' tab for specific confirmation on this product.
Do I need to seal these tiles?
Porcelain and glazed ceramic tiles do not require sealing. Natural stone and some unglazed tiles may require sealing before and after grouting.
