How Do You Install 60x120cm Polished Porcelain Without Lippage?
Lippage is when one tile edge sits higher than its neighbour. On a polished tile, the reflection shows every millimetre of it. Large tiles also have a slight natural bow along their length, so the fitting method matters more than with small tiles.
- Start flat. Floors need to be within about 3mm under a 3m straightedge. Use a levelling compound to fix dips first.
- Use the right adhesive and full coverage. Apply a C2 S1 flexible adhesive with a large notched trowel (10–12mm is common for this size). Back-butter each tile. Aim for a solid bed with no voids, especially on floors and in showers.
- Use levelling clips. A clip-and-wedge system holds neighbouring edges flush while the adhesive sets.
- Offset by one-third, not half. A 50% brick bond lines up the high middle of one tile with the low end of the next. A one-third offset (40cm on a 120cm tile) or a straight stack keeps joints flatter.
- Keep joints narrow but real. Rectified edges allow thin joints. Around 2–3mm on walls and about 3mm on floors is a safe range. Never butt-joint them.
- Cut with the right tool. You need a rail cutter longer than 120cm for full-length cuts, or a wet saw. Cut holes with diamond core bits.
